Update 2:30PM: Receive a response email from Miami-Dade County now saying that the meeting is cancelled due to lack of quorum. See details below.

Update 3:30PM: Miami-Dade county website has not been updated to show a cancellation. I have not receive any automatic notifications.

Earlier this morning the Alper JCC sent a message to parties interested in the which many read as the meeting being cancelled.

Dear Community Members,

Thank you again for taking the time to attend the recent community meeting at the Alper JCC and for your thoughtful participation and feedback.

We wanted to share an important update regarding the rezoning application. The Greater Miami Jewish Federation has formally requested that the County defer the originally scheduled April 23, 2026 hearing to a new date of June 11, 2026.

This additional time will allow for continued engagement with the community as plans evolve. Our goal is to use this period productively to:

  • Further discuss the proposal with neighbors and stakeholders

  • Address questions and concerns raised during the initial meeting

  • Explore opportunities for collaboration and alignment wherever possible

We look forward to using the time to continue to discuss the plans with the neighbors and local community.

Warm regards,
Alper Jewish Community Center
Greater Miami Jewish Federation

The JCC CEO Irene Tzanani sent me a courtesy copy around 9:45 this morning but I had not opened it yet when people started posting and contacting me that the meeting was cancelled. I walked over and spoke personally with Irene to explain the situation and she agreed to send an update which clarifies the intent.

Irene just sent me the updated text. It has not been sent yet, so the final text may change.

The following message will be sent to the group shortly. Please let me know if you would like me to include you in future communications to the group. Thank you.

Dear Community Members,

It has come to our attention that our previous communication may have caused some confusion, and we would like to clarify.

Today’s rezoning meeting has not been canceled. Our intent was to inform you that the Greater Miami Jewish Federation plans to make a formal request at this evening’s meeting to defer the hearing from today, April 23rd, to June 11th. This communication was not meant to suggest whether you should or should not attend.

We hope this helps clear up any confusion.

I reached out by phone and email at 12:00 to Miami-Dade County to confirm the meeting status. At 1:08 I received the following from Elizabeth Alvarez (pdf below):

Good afternoon,

We have been informed that there will be no quorum for today’s CZAB 12 meeting. As a result, all items will be deferred to the next CZAB 12 meeting scheduled for May 14, 2026.

As per the request for deferral, please find attached the letter submitted by the applicant’s representative. We are currently in the process of uploading this document to the Citizen Self-Service portal.

Regards,

Elizabeth C. Alvarez, AICP

Planning Development Manager

I then called Eric Silva - Assistant Director Department of Regulatory and Economic Resources - Development Services.

I asked about the meeting status and Mr. Silva said that “a couple of the CZAB members called in sick and another couple could not make it”.

I have requested the names and communications of those members.

I will be at the meeting tonight, regardless. There are several other zoning items that are scheduled for discussion and I want to see if anyone is present from the county.

As of 3PM the county website does not show the meeting as cancelled. I am registered to receive zoning updates via email and have not received anything.
